Cheney's Energy Bill

Congress will soon be voting on the ultra-secretive energy bill that Bush and Cheney have been planning for years. Some of the lowlights include:

In a blow to the renewable-fuels industry, House-Senate GOP negotiators eliminated a major Senate-passed initiative that would have required large utilities to use a set amount of power generated by renewable sources, such as windmills and solar panels, by 2015.

For the first time, the bill would offer a production tax credit of 1.85 cents per kilowatt-hour to the first few companies that build nuclear reactors featuring advanced designs. The provision would put nuclear power on the same footing in the tax code as clean, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

The bill would also limit product liability lawsuits against the makers of the petrochemical gasoline additive MBTE, found to have contaminated water supplies in some communities. Limiting such suits was a top priority of lawmakers from Gulf Coast states where MBTE is refined and blended. But the issue is contentious in states where MBTE has been widely used.

Unfortunately, there's more. And a link-filled analysis here.
