Tuesday, November 16, 2004Facts are simple and facts are straightFacts are lazy and facts are late Facts all come with points of view Facts don’t do what I want them to* Howard Zinn, author of the wonderful book, A People's History of the United States, has prepared a companion volume, Voices of a People's History of the United States. The following excerpt is taken from his introduction to that volume. From the start of my teaching and writing, I had no illusions about "objectivity," if that meant avoiding a point of view. I knew that a historian (or a journalist, or anyone telling a story) was forced to choose, from an infinite number of facts, what to present, what to omit. And that decision inevitably would reflect, whether consciously or not, the interests of the historian. If you've never read Zinn's A People's History of the United States, I strongly urge you to do so. *Crosseyed and Painless, The Talking Heads posted by chris at 4:24 PM ------------------ |
