And this election (and future elections to come, perhaps) have mashed those two together in a frightening way for a country that was founded on the separation of church and state. But in this election, evangelicals said they were motivated to turn out because of Mr. Bush's support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, prompted by a decision a year ago by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court allowing such marriages in the state.
